Hancox Equestrian Loose Boxes

When we developed our loose boxes, we focused on creating a product that combines strength, durability, and high-quality design. Constructed with robust materials, these loose boxes feature our signature stable doors with hinged windows at the back and a fixed 6-blade louvered window at the front for superior ventilation. Fully equipped with excellent airflow, including ventilation through the ridge, windows, and doors, they ensure a constant supply of fresh air. The carefully designed roof pitch allows stale air to escape, maintaining a healthy environment for your horse. Unique to Hancox, a galvanised steel plinth replaces the traditional single row of bricks, which can become dislodged and eventually break up. This innovation allows us to have more control over the build, offering reassurance that your loose box will remain secure and long-lasting. Safe, secure, and built to last, Hancox Loose Boxes provide the ideal space for your horse, backed by the peace of mind that comes with our quality craftsmanship.

Key Range Features

Box Profile Roof Sheets Fleece-Lined

We use fleece-lined box profile roof sheets as standard, offering exceptional durability and strength. The anti-condensation backing absorbs droplets, retaining them until the temperature rises and moisture dissipates naturally. This also helps reduce noise from heavy rain, creating a quieter environment inside.

Galvanised Flashings

Galvanised flashings are included as standard around the windows and doors to protect the timber. This feature helps safeguard your investment and maintain the stability and appearance of your stable.

Ventilated Soffit

Our stables come with a ventilated soffit as standard, designed to help with airflow. It effectively draws in fresh air, improving ventilation and maintaining a healthier environment for your horse.

Galvanised Angled Plinth

The galvanised angled plinth is used instead of a traditional brick plinth, offering a more durable and modern solution.

Still have a question?

A loose box for horses is a separate stable compartment where a horse can be kept. The horse is kept in the loose box untethered, so they are able to move about within the compartment and even lie down if they wish to. if you can't find your answers about loose boxes on this page contact us below with our form

These loose stables usually come in a size of 10 by 12 feet or 14 by 14 feet. The size that is required/needed depends upon the size of the horse that is going to be kept inside it. There will need to be ample of room for the horse (and possibly a newborn foal too if used for foaling) to be able to comfortably move about freely and lie down to rest.

A loose box for horses is literally just a smaller and isolated stable, so the set up and management process is exactly the same as with other bigger stables, with hay, bedding, straw etc. The only difference is that the floor of a loose box for horses is usually lined with rubber matting for added comfort, the bedding is just placed on top of this floor as with any normal stable floor.

The mucking out and cleaning process is exactly the same as with a bigger, normal stable. Empty out, sweep, mop, reset with clean bedding once dry.

You can choose anywhere to put your loose box for horses, but just remember the following points when choosing the ideal location:

  • Have the entrance facing away from winds for allowing warmth for recovering horses and/or newborn foals.
  • Ensure that it is placed near a water supply for cleaning out and supplying fresh drinking water for the horse.
  • Easy vehicle access. Ensure that your vehicles and vet vehicles can easily get to the loose box and park by if needed.
  • Avoid steep slopes and low-lying muddy areas.
  • For drainage, ensure the area does not pool water or flood, because this could cause hoof rot and soggy/wet bedding.
  • Face the morning and daytime sun to let daylight in.
  • Keep pedestrian pathways to the loose box firm to ensure easy foot access in wet weather.
  • Have the loose box located where you can easily visibly keep an eye on the horse inside.
  • Do not place in an area by grain bins or hay stores, as these areas can accumulate dust in the loose box.
  • Do not place the loose box by/under any low hanging trees or any trees that may have branches snap/break in stormy/windy weather conditions.
  • Ensure that the area that the box is located on and the surrounding area of the box is a flat surface. This is to avoid horses slipping/falling when entering/exiting the loose box.

Yes, they are safe and secure. They are made from weather resistant sturdy wood and offer enough room inside for the horse’s freedom of movement. They also give better ventilation than normal stables, by keeping fresh air flowing through the loose box. A loose box for horses is also the ideal way for isolation control when a horse needs to be isolated for recovery, illness, feeding control, foaling etc.
